Tailored polymer armour rods and shaped fillers for the offshore industry
Lighter, stronger subsea cables with plastic rods
Traditionally, steel has been the preferred material for subsea cables. However, advanced plastic rods are emerging as a compelling alternative, offering significant benefits. While a complete steel replacement is not yet achievable, a customised blend of plastic offers a powerful solution.
Finding the optimal plastic composition requires a complete approach. At Primo, we use a range of rigorously tested materials, each with distinct properties crucial for subsea cable performance, including:
- Tensile strength: This property ensures the cable resists pulling forces effectively, a vital factor for deep-sea applications.
- Modulus: Maintaining the cable's shape under immense underwater pressure is critical, and this property plays a key role.
- Elongation: A certain level of flexibility is necessary without compromising the cable's integrity, and elongation allows for this essential characteristic.
- Conductivity: For fiber optic cables, ensuring efficient signal transmission is paramount, and the chosen material must possess the necessary conductive properties.
